We’re all concerned about how the current economic situation impacts
photographers as well as advertisers; attendees will certainly
appreciate, and benefit from, three successful Chicago photographers
and an ad agency art buyer who will lend their perspectives.

The format will include a catered social hour (meet, eat & drink with
fellow attendees), then enter the meeting where we will pass the
wireless microphone, hear from the audience and the panel’s
suggestions for survival strategies.

Mary Virginia Swanson makes it her goal to help guide photographers towards the strengths in their work and to identify appreciative audiences for their prints, exhibitions, editorial and licensing placement. Swanson has a diverse professional background, having coordinated educational, publication and exhibition programs for a wide range of institutions and businesses in our field.

Swanson is considered an expert in the area of marketing and licensing fine art. It was during her tenure heading special projects at Magnum Photos, that she recognized the opportunities for artists to develop second markets for their work and in 1991 she founded SWANSTOCK, an innovative agency that managed licensing rights for fine art photographers.

Swanson currently works with photographers as a marketing consultant, and is a sought-after portfolio reviewer.

Paul will show his work and discuss issues such as instinct, self-confidence, and trust in the creative process as well as methods for collaborating with clients and subjects, handling difficult personalities, and working effectively under pressure.

Paul Elledge is a Chicago-based photographer and filmmaker whose clients include major advertising agencies, record companies, and corporations. He has been honored with numerous national and international awards for work that melds photographic realism with painterly qualities of illustration. Paul has photographed such celebrities as AC/DC, Billy Corgan, Jennifer Hudson, Ministry, Willie Nelson, Trent Reznor, Luciano Pavarotti, and Oprah Winfrey to name a few. His work has appeared worldwide in such publications as Audubon, Fast Company, Life, Men’s Health, People, Rolling Stone, Time, and Wired, among others. Paul’s book Luna, Bella Luna chronicles the people of Vesale, Italy, and he has also collaborated on several books with chef Charlie Trotter as well as Chef Art Smith and most recently Chef Rick Bayless. In addition to photography, Paul has directed several music videos and television commercials.

Pete McArthur has been one of the most prominent commercial & advertising photographers in the field for quite some time. His images are highly conceptual and he’s developed a look and feel that is uniquely his. Trained as a graphic designer, he later switched to photography. His early influences to his work are actually painters Wayne Thiebaud and Paul Wonner. You will immediately recognize his work – his signature style has been mimicked by many, but none have the reached his level of success. Come hear Pete talk about his work and discuss the photography industry on Tuesday, March 17th.
